GRASS RANGE - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to reconstruct about 5.5 miles of U.S. Highway 87/Montana Highway 200 west of Grass Range in Fergus County.
The project begins approximately 5.5 miles west of Grass Range at reference post 107.00 and extends east for approximately 5.8 miles, ending near the bridge over the South Fork of McDonald Creek at reference post 112.77.
Proposed work includes reconstructing the roadway to a top width of 40 feet and replacing all existing timber bridges, culverts and guardrail. Work also includes relocating existing irrigation ditches currently located out of the right-of-way, constructing a school bus turn around and mailbox turnouts, installing new centerline, shoulder rumble strips, signage and delineators, and potentially reconfiguring the Y-intersection at reference post 112.7.
The purpose of the project is to reconstruct the existing roadway to current standards for a principal arterial.
Construction is tentatively planned for beyond 2021 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of utilities will be required. MDT staff will contact all potentially affected landowners prior to performing survey work on their land. Staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
